Memorial Day weekend is the perfect time to enjoy all of your favorite summer foods and drinks. However, it's important to be mindful of how much sugar you're consuming. Too much sugar can lead to weight gain, increased risk of heart disease, and other health problems. There are a few easy ways to cut down on sugar without sacrificing flavor. For example, you can use fresh fruit to sweeten your iced tea or lemonade instead of adding sugar. You can also look for recipes that use natural sweeteners like honey or stevia. By making a few small changes, you can still enjoy all your favorite memorial day treats without going overboard on sugar.
You'll be happy to know that these Memorial Day cocktails are low in sugar, with only about 10g of added sugar from the FICKS All Natural Strawberry Margarita Mix.
So how do we create a red, white, and blue cocktail? Take your mind all the way back to science class, and you'll remember those lessons on liquid densities. Basically, liquids of different densities will sit on top of each other in according to weight. The heaviest liquids will sink to the bottom, while the lightest liquids will float to the top. This is how we create our layers in a red, white, and blue drink!
The literal foundation of this drink will be the FICKS Strawberry Margarita Mix. American flag red in color, and packed with freshly pureed California strawberries, this FICKS mix is dense enough to serve as the base of our all American cocktail.
For the white, we're going to get a little fancy with an old bartender trick - egg whites. Egg whites have a lower density than most alcohols, so they will float perfectly in the middle of our drink. They also give the cocktail a beautiful foamy texture. This can be one of the trickier parts of the recipe, so we wanted to break it down for you.
To separate egg whites from the yolks, start by gently cracking an egg and hold it above a completely dry, open cocktail shaker. This is what we're going to use to catch the egg whites.
With the egg's crack horizontal, gently pry it open allowing the egg whites to drip down into the cocktail shaker while the yolk rests in the base of the shell. Pour the yolk back-and-forth allowing the remaining egg whites to drip down until there are none left in the shell. Discard the yolk.
Next, you'll give the cocktail shaker a good shake for 30 seconds until the egg whites are good and foamy. And just like that you're an expert mixologist! You can use this egg white trick to fancy up any cocktail you can imagine - including some classics like the gin fizz.
Now, we're keeping things low sugar and all natural so we're going to get a little creative with the blue by using organic spirulina.
What is spirulina you ask? It's a blue-green algae that is often sold in powder form. You can even buy it on Amazon. It's incredibly healthy, and packed with vitamins and minerals like iron, calcium, magnesium, and more. It has a very light taste, often described as earthy, that will blend in nicely with the fruit of our cocktail.
Spirulina also happens to come in an electric blue flavor perfect to finish our American flag cocktail. All you need to do is mix a small amount of spirulina with water to your desired hue of blue.
There's one more bartender trick you'll need here, and that's to allow the blue liquid to rest comfortably above the red. With a spoon turned over, you're going to slowly pour the blue liquid over the spoon so it trickles down onto the drink without breaking its surface area. I know that sounds kind of intense, but I promise it's not that difficult. Just take your time, and be careful not to pour too quickly.
Now we have our three layers! If you're feeling extra patriotic, use a star shaped cookie cutter to cut out some strawberries to drop on top of the white foam.
