We've got the full story on Dry January, and some cocktails to help you skip alcohol in style these next 31 days

 Dry January History Meme

The ball has dropped, sparklers have sparkled and there may be slight dents in the pots from banging on them at midnight. It’s here, the cold reality of January 1st where after a night of fun, friends and, of course, delicious drinks to celebrate the year gone by it’s time to start the year a better you with Dry January.

As a company bent on bringing a better-for-you bar to the world, including nonalcoholic cocktails, we’re all about a responsible relationship with adult beverages year round. But January especially gives some good focus to adjusting our drink choices so that we can supercharge our personal goals for the new year.

That’s why – SHOCK – we’re an alcohol company that is PRO Dry January!

Everything in moderation as they say, and one month out of the year to really hit the reset button and set yourself up for success the remainder of the year seems like a wise idea.

But where did this idea even come from?

The History of Dry January

While fasting from certain food and drinks is a concept millennia old, the contemporary version of dry January came about in 2012 when the British Alcohol Change UK challenged people to give up alcohol for 31 days. Millions of people took place, often using the hashtag #soberissexy, and its popularity has spread to the U.S. in a big way.

In fact, about 1 in 7 Americans plan to participate in Dry January in 2022.

But it’s not easy going cold turkey after, well, a lot of warm turkey and drinks over the holidays.

Alcohol Consumption Spikes Over the Holidays

You probably could have guessed from all those parties and, ahem, personal experience that people drink a lot during the holidays. Like, a lot a lot.

Just look at FICKS cocktail mixer monthly sales in 2021:

And FICKS isn’t alone in this.

During the holidays, Americans double their alcohol drinking between Thanksgiving and New Years.

No wonder we need a little break from the bar in January!

What Can Dry January Do for You?

We’re big believers in everything in moderation – I mean, why else would we start a low sugar cocktail company?

This could be your month to press the reset button and enjoy a few benefits that come with a break from alcohol.

You Can Sleep Better

When you drink, you typically miss out or rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. While you’re supposed to have between 6-7 cycles of REM sleep per night, you usually only get 1-2 after drinking.

Aside from good sleep feeling incredible in the mornings, you’ll get all the benefits of better sleep like feeling recharged, focused, and maybe some dreams about a new non alcoholic cocktail recipe to try the next day. 😉

You Can be More Hydrated

When you drink alcohol, you lose around four times as much liquid as what you drink – causing some serious dehydration. Skip the alcohol this January, retain more water, and avoid headaches pulling you back from that new workout you told yourself you’d start.

Your Skin Can Glow

Another benefit of being more hydrated? Your skin could look even better (although it looks incredible already). Alcohol-free skin is better hydrated, reducing dry patches and eliminating the blotchy or puffy skin that can come from a week filled with holiday parties each night.

The Virgin Mary

Bloody Mary Mix with hot sauce and celery garnish

Full disclosure, if you walk into the FICKS office before noon you’ve got a solid chance of seeing one of our cofounders drinking FICKS Bloody Mary Mix right from the bottle (without alcohol, of course!). He loves tomato juice, and just can’t help it.

But that's not such a bad thing! Virgin Bloody Mary's are actually highly nutritious. Tomato juice is packed with vitamins and minerals, and is rich in lycopene - a powerful antioxidant.

California tomatoes make up 90% of each bottle of our Bloody Mary. Complimented with an all natural blend of spices and subtle amount of pepper spice, a Bloody Mary is the perfect nonalcoholic morning cocktail for Dry January, especially if you’re making a pitcher’s worth for brunch.

Ingredients (Makes 2 Cocktails)

  • 8oz FICKS Bloody Mary Mix
  • Ice
  • Celery Root (for garnish)

Directions

  1. Fill 2 glasses with ice
  2. Pour 4oz FICKS Bloody Mary Mix into each glass
  3. Garnish with celery root
  4. If you want a little extra spice, add a dash of Cholula or Tabasco sauce until reaching desired heat.
